What the Civics Test Covers

The U.S. citizenship civics test is given verbally during your naturalization interview. A USCIS officer will ask you up to 10 questions from the 100 civics topics. You need to answer at least 6 correctly to pass.

The 100 civics topics are organized into three categories:

American Government — the three branches, Congress, the President, the Supreme Court, the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, rights and responsibilities of citizens

American History — the colonial period, the American Revolution, the Civil War, the world wars, and major events in U.S. history

Integrated Civics — U.S. geography, national symbols, the two major political parties, and federal holidays

All 100 topics and their acceptable answers are published by USCIS as part of the naturalization study materials.

How These Practice Tests Are Structured

This course includes four 25-question practice tests — 100 questions in total — covering all 100 civics topic areas. Each test simulates the format of the naturalization interview: one question at a time, answered from memory.

After completing each test, you can immediately review your answers to see which topics need more attention. Retakes are unlimited. All tests are browser-based and work on any device.

Who This Is For

This course is for anyone preparing for the civics portion of the U.S. naturalization interview. It is useful whether you are taking the interview for the first time or have been rescheduled and want to study further.

No prior U.S. history background is required. The practice questions are written to help you understand the reasoning behind each answer — not just memorize a list.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many civics questions will I be asked at my naturalization interview?
The USCIS officer will ask up to 10 civics questions. You must answer at least 6 correctly to pass. Once you answer 6 correctly, the civics portion of the interview ends.

Are the civics questions chosen randomly?
The officer selects questions from the USCIS-published list of 100 civics topics. You will not know in advance which 10 questions will be asked, so you should be comfortable with all 100 topics.

What happens if I fail the civics test at my interview?
If you do not pass on your first attempt, USCIS will schedule a second interview within 60–90 days. You will be retested only on the portion you failed — English or civics, or both.

Are there any exemptions from the civics test?
Applicants who are 65 years or older and have been lawful permanent residents for at least 20 years may study a shorter list of 20 questions (marked with an asterisk on the USCIS website) instead of all 100.

How long should I study before my interview?
Most applicants spend 4–8 weeks reviewing all 100 civics topics. Study time varies depending on how familiar you already are with U.S. history and government. Practicing with timed question sets helps build the recall speed needed for the verbal interview format.

How do these practice tests help me prepare?
Our four 25-question sets cover all 100 civics topics in a randomized multiple-choice format. Each set includes instant answer review so you can learn from mistakes immediately. Unlimited retakes let you keep practicing until you can answer every topic confidently.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many civics questions will I be asked in my interview?
The USCIS officer will ask up to 10 questions. As soon as you answer 6 correctly, the civics portion ends.

Is the civics test written or verbal?
It is verbal. The officer asks each question out loud and you answer out loud in English. There is no written or multiple-choice format.

Do I need to memorize exact answers?
No. USCIS publishes a list of acceptable answers for each topic. Many questions have more than one correct answer. Any acceptable answer counts.

How many times can I retake these practice tests?
Unlimited. Your one-time purchase gives you permanent access to all four tests.
