How NY administers the exam

The NY State Real Estate Salesperson exam is administered by PSI Services (now part of Pearson VUE) on behalf of the NY Department of State (NY DOS). The exam is computer-based and given at PSI/Pearson VUE testing centers across New York State.

You schedule directly through your eAccessNY account at the NY DOS website. You don’t book directly with PSI — bookings flow through DOS’s licensing portal.

How to schedule

1. Complete your 77-hour pre-licensing course (school issues a completion certificate)
2. Log into eAccessNY (or create an account)
3. Pay the $15 exam fee
4. Choose a testing center and time slot from available appointments
5. Receive a confirmation email — bring this on test day

What to expect at any PSI / Pearson VUE testing center

Check-in

• Arrive 30 minutes early. Late arrivals can be turned away.
• Bring two forms of ID — one must have a photo. Names must match your eAccessNY registration exactly.
• Bring your scheduling confirmation (printed or on phone).
• Staff will photograph you, verify ID, and may scan you with a metal-detector wand.
• You’ll sign in/out if you leave the room (e.g., bathroom break).

What’s provided at PSI

• Computer workstation with the exam software
• Basic four-function calculator
• Scratch paper and a pencil (must be returned at end)
• Headphones or earplugs available on request
• A locker for personal items (small)

Prohibited at PSI

• Phones, smartwatches, fitness trackers
• Your own calculator (use the provided one)
• Notes, books, study materials of any kind
• Hats, hoods, sunglasses
• Food and drinks (water sometimes allowed — varies by location)
• Outerwear (jackets often stored in locker)

How to choose the right testing center

Consider proximity, not familiarity

The closest center to your home is usually the right choice. Test-day anxiety is enough — don’t add 90 minutes of subway commuting to your morning. If you live in Brooklyn, schedule a Brooklyn center even if Manhattan opens earlier.

Off-peak times = easier scheduling

Tuesday-Thursday mornings are typically the easiest to book at popular NYC centers. Mondays and Fridays have higher demand from candidates who want long weekends afterward.

Reschedule fees

You can reschedule via eAccessNY. If you reschedule more than 24-48 hours before your appointment, there’s usually no penalty. Last-minute cancellations may forfeit your exam fee — check current PSI/NY DOS policies.

If you don’t pass on your first attempt

NY does not impose a waiting period between attempts. Reschedule through eAccessNY, pay the $15 exam fee again, and pick a new appointment. Most second-attempt candidates pass — they know what tripped them up the first time and can target their study.
